On June 10th, OPRFC hosted a fundraiser for its charitable program "Engage" which is designed to provide more underprivileged kids the chance to play the fastest growing sport in America in a fun and safe environment. The event featured a poker tournament, food and beverages, yard games, a raffle, silent auction, photo booth, dancing, merchandise and more.
Due to the excellent support of the local community, OPRFC exceeded its fundraising goals, meaning not only will Engage be able to execute every aspect of the program originally planned, but now have the funds to help more kids than anticipated should the demand and need arise. At minimum, this includes:
*Hosting mini clinics at the Boys and Girls Club summer camps and donating balls to each clubhouse for their use while we are away.
*Hosting approximately 100 kids from local nonprofits in our Big Annual Clinic, which provides each kid with an athletic kit including bag, water bottle, rugby ball and jersey.
*Inviting kids who want more to participate in our Fall Youth Camp, a non-tackle program every Sunday in October that will include coaches, referees, training and two hand touch rugby games.
*Donating cleats to participants in our Fall Youth Camp who could not otherwise own a pair of their own.
Engage has also partnered with the Boys and Girls Club of Tucson, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Tucson and USA Rugby to make this program especially great.
The success for Engage's first fundraising year would not have been possible without the help of its wonderful sponsors and donors:
Kinerk, Schmidt and Sethi, PLLC
The Tucson Conquistadores
The Zuckerman Outreach Community Foundation
The Volpe Team at NOVA Home Loans
Design Modulars Incorporated

Old Pueblo (O.P.) Lightning is the Pacific South DII club champion, a title that took two come-from-behind playoff wins … decided in the closing minutes … on back-to-back weekends. In the semifinals, the Tucson team defeated Ventura on a closing-minutes penalty kick to win 23-22. In Saturday’s final, an injury-time try produced a 27-24 victory over Pasadena. The reward is a good one: a berth to the western portion of the DII national quarterfinals, which will be held in Tucson.
