In rugby and our community, to engage is to get involved. It is to tackle the challenges in front of you. It is to put you and your team in the best position to do great things.
Engage is a nonprofit started by the Old Pueblo Rugby Football Club to give more kids a chance to try a different—but phenomenal—sport in a safe environment. Because rugby requires mental and physical grit, discipline and teamwork, Engage helps kids thrive by showing them the invaluable life skills rugby naturally instills. Once a part of Engage, the kids become a member of our club—an irreplaceable family of lifelong brothers and sisters.
OPRFC’s program teaches kids how to engage on the pitch and in life.
Rugby is the fastest growing sport in America. Though adult rugby is primarily a full contact sport, youth rugby offers safe, non-tackle touch leagues for kids as young as six. To give more kids an opportunity to join this movement, OPRFC’s Engage program is two tiered. First, OPRFC holds an annual non-tackle clinic for kids from various local youth charities, teaching them the simple skills, rules and games that come from rugby. At the end of the clinic, each kid receives an athletic bag including a rugby ball, water bottle and t-shirt. Because rugby only requires a ball and a patch of land, this gives them the opportunity to share the various games they have learned with their friends.
It doesn’t stop there. Kids who enjoyed the clinic and want more are offered scholarship to join OPRFC’s Fall youth program, providing them an opportunity and all the resources they need to the be a part of a team, participate in a full season of non-tackle rugby and become an official member of our rugby family.
